In Phil’s Memory

In Phil’s Memory

It’s taken a day to process what many of us witnessed at the celebration of Phil’s life yesterday. It was God-honoring, full of classic Phil-isms, and capable of changing a life—just like Phil.

As we watched video footage of “hunting Phil” through the years, we were reminded of God’s provision for His people. Phil often emphasized that duck hunting and fishing weren’t just hobbies—they were ways to provide for his family. Through the heartfelt words of his five children, we learned that “parent Phil” understood parenting isn’t a perfect, linear plan—it’s about doing what works for your family, and more than anything, it’s about love.

The worship time reminded us that “preacher Phil” took every opportunity—whether on a fishing trip or duck hunt—to share the gospel. His grandkids leading the worship reminded us the legacy we leave matters. More video clips showed us “husband Phil,” and we saw that rugged men can also be tender, kind, and loving. And through the stories that made us laugh, we realized that grief and humor can exist in the same space. And from all the people in the room who hugged and laughed and cried together, we got a glimpse of Heaven.

I met Phil as a young wife and mom. His journey to Jesus, the clothes he wore, and the way he talked couldn’t have been more different from my world—but what we knew for certain is that we’ll spend eternity together. His mansion might be in the woods and mine in a “yuppie neighborhood,” as he often joked about our street, but we’ll both be there—singing and praising God. What a day that will be!

Thank you, Phil, for the life lessons. Thank you for raising a man who loves, protects, and cares for my daughter and grandchildren. And thank you for showing us all what it truly means to be bold. See you soon!
