That’s Life

That’s Life

It’s summer, so a beach trip is on the minds of most Southerners. Some of our family went recently and sent videos of the kiddos playing in the waves. At one point, five-year-old John Shepherd was learning to ride the waves on a boogie board. There’s definitely a learning curve, and Sheppie was tossed around like he was in a washing machine more than once. But the adults watching marveled that, time after time, he got back up and faced his giant—the next wave.

That’s life, isn’t it?

The story of David has fascinated and inspired believers for centuries. How could a young boy pick up five stones—but only need one—to take down a giant? The key lies in David’s unwavering trust, found in 1 Samuel 17:45: “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.”

David knew who went before him. Just like Sheppie facing wave after wave, we can face whatever comes our way when we remember who is with us. Everyone’s giant looks different—fear, loss, uncertainty, health crisis-but our victory isn’t found in our own strength. It’s found in the name of the Lord.

So this week, when facing that giant, pick up your stone and remember who the battle belongs to.
